On Becoming Vegan — How I Coached Myself

In January 2021 I decided to switch to a plant-based diet, permanently. After 47 years of unquestioning meat and dairy eating. This is the conversation in my head that led to that change. It might just help you make yours.

So what’s going on fella?

Sheesh. Feels big. I think I want to be vegan. Well, at least to change to a plant-based diet. I think I want to do it permanently, which is taking me totally by surprise and a little bit freaking me out. I didn’t expect this to happen. I mean, a month ago I wouldn’t have even considered it. Only three days ago I hadn’t had the idea. It feels like a massive step. But one I want to take. I think. I’m not sure. Help!

Phew, deep breaths fella, what makes it important now?

So I have been doing Veganuary, as you know, because you’re the voice in my head. That I am.

Anyway, if I am honest, I only started doing it because I thought it would make me thinner. But then I got worried about protein and if would get weaker, or lose the benefits from workouts and I started to wobble.

So I watched The Game Changers, the thing about vegan athletes, just to sort of keep me going.

But I laughed when I heard that thing about “where does an Ox or a Gorilla get its protein? Is an ox weak?” It was a…
